Have you ever seen someone pick from the wall and then tap their tile on the the top of their rack? Many people do this in order to close the window of opportunity on the previously discarded tile, but guess what- it doesn’t! The tile hasn’t been fully racked so the discard is still live for anyone to claim!
So when is a tile fully racked? According to Mahjong Made Easy, a racked tile is defined as:
“A tile that has been placed on the sloped part of the rack along with the players other tiles”1
It goes on to say that tapping or clicking the rack with the tile is not considered racking. (The picture above is a great example of what a racked tile looks like.)
Why is this so important? Because there are four different ways to close the window of opportunity for the previous discard2.
- If the player to the right of the discarder has drawn from the wall and racked their tile.
- If the player to the right of the discarder has drawn from the wall and discarded a tile.
- If another player is making a Joker exchange.
- If another player has declared Mahjong.
If you find yourself tapping your rack, a good habit to put into practice is to pick from the wall and rack immediately. That’s the easiest way for the previously discarded tile to become a “dead” tile. No one wants to miss out the tile they are needing, or a Joker, just because they tapped their rack!!
{Love the tiles in the picture? They are from the Miss Mahjong line}
